About this position

PhD opportunity in Machine Learning in Medicine at the University of Bern, Switzerland, in the Machine Learning in Medicine Lab led by Prof. Dr. Lisa Koch.

The project focuses on trustworthy machine learning for healthcare and aims to develop methods for multimodal health data to characterise and model disease progression. Research directions include multimodal representation learning across imaging, time series, and tabular data; disease progression modelling from cross-sectional and sparse longitudinal data; causal machine learning to disentangle progression from treatment effects; learning with missing modalities and irregularly sampled signals; and fairness and bias in multimodal models.

The lab works on applications in biomedical imaging, wearable sensor data, and clinical measurements, and collaborates closely with clinicians at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital. The team describes itself as small, collaborative, and well connected within Switzerland and internationally.

Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree in a quantitative discipline such as computer science, machine learning, statistics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar; strong foundations in machine learning; practical Python experience implementing and evaluating ML models; strong analytical skills; and interest in healthcare research. Experience with biomedical data is a plus.

Funding and terms: full-time employment at 100% for 3 years with an option to extend by 1 year. The annual gross salary for 2026 is 50,042 Swiss francs including the 13th month salary.
