About this position
Heidelberg University is advertising a Postdoctoral Researcher – Translational AI in Neuropathology position in Heidelberg, Germany, within the Department of Neuropathology.
The role sits at the intersection of computer science, medical science, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, and quantitative data science. The successful candidate will develop and adapt foundation models and multimodal models that integrate histomorphology, DNA methylation, sequencing, spatial data, and clinical data to address clinical needs such as risk stratification, therapy response prediction, rare entity identification, and AI-supported process optimization.
The department highlights access to one of the world’s largest clinically annotated CNS tumour cohorts, fully digitised histopathology, genome-wide methylation profiling, panel and long-read sequencing, spatial multi-omics, and dedicated GPU infrastructure. The work is highly translational, with a pathway from retrospective proof-of-concept to prospective validation and certified diagnostic use.
This is a full-time postdoctoral appointment (TV-L E13) for 3 years. The post includes mentoring, support for third-party funding applications, habilitation opportunities, and a clear perspective toward establishing an independent research group. The team also collaborates with UKHD, DKFZ, KiTZ, EUcanAI, and international partners.
Eligibility highlights: PhD or MD/PhD in computer science, computational biology, biomedical engineering, physics, mathematics, medicine, or a related field; strong publication record in machine learning applied to biomedical imaging and/or omics data; excellent English; German is welcome but not required.
How to apply: Submit your application online through the official Heidelberg University application portal. For position-specific questions, contact Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Felix Sahm by email.
