About this position
University of Bath, Department of Chemical Engineering, is advertising a competition-funded PhD studentship in mechanochemical synthesis and modification of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for hydrogen storage.
The project focuses on sustainable fabrication of porous materials, including HKUST-1 and selected zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), using ball milling and other mechanochemical approaches. The research aims to understand how milling conditions, precursor composition, and modification sequence affect metal substitution, functionalisation, defect formation, pore accessibility, and gas-binding performance.
Students will investigate hydrogen storage and carbon dioxide capture, comparing mechanochemical routes with conventional synthesis in terms of solvent use, processing time, energy demand, reproducibility, and activation/washing steps. Characterisation will include powder X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, electron microscopy, and gas-sorption measurements, with possible specialist X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy training and access to the EPSRC National Facility at Harwell.
This PhD is well suited to applicants with backgrounds in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or Environmental Science. A strong interest in materials synthesis, porous materials, sustainable energy technologies, and clean energy is desirable. Prior experience in materials characterisation or gas adsorption is helpful but not required.
Funding is available for Home and Overseas students, subject to UKRI limits on Overseas awards. The studentship covers tuition fees, includes a £1,000 annual training support fee, and provides a maintenance stipend of £21,805 (2026/27 rate). International students must fund their Student visa and Immigration Health Surcharge themselves.
Applications must be submitted through the University of Bath online PhD application form for Chemical Engineering. Applicants should quote the project title exactly and list Prof Mi Tian as the intended supervisor. The project is expected to start on 04 October 2027, with an alternative start date possible by agreement.

What's required
Applicants must have, or be about to obtain, a UK Honours degree at 1st or 2.1 level, or an international equivalent. A master's-level qualification would be advantageous. Suitable backgrounds include Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or Environmental Science. Interest in materials synthesis, porous materials, and sustainable energy technologies is desirable. Previous experience in materials characterisation or gas adsorption would be beneficial but is not essential. Non-UK applicants not currently studying in the UK must meet the programme's English language requirement before the application deadline.
How to apply
Apply online through the University of Bath PhD application form for Chemical Engineering. Enter the project title exactly as given and name Prof Mi Tian as the intended supervisor. Select University of Bath URSA in the Funding Your Studies section, and if applying for two projects, complete the second project fields as instructed.
