About this position

Bath Engineering & Design Studentships at the University of Bath are offering a PhD project on mechanochemistry for low-carbon cements. The project sits in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering and is supervised by Dr Ilda Tole and Prof Susan Bernal Lopez.

This research explores how mechanochemical activation can turn abundant but low-reactivity minerals, excavated clays, and industrial residues into reactive cementitious materials. The project will study how mineralogy, crystal structure, particle interactions, grinding aids, and processing conditions affect energy transfer, structural disorder, agglomeration, and reactivity. Experimental work will use X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, particle size and surface area analysis, thermal analysis, and calorimetry to build mineral–processing–structure–reactivity relationships.

The studentship is competition-funded and available for Home and Overseas students, although Overseas awards are capped under UKRI policy. Funding includes tuition fees, a £1,000 annual training support fee, and a maintenance stipend of £21,805 for 2026/27. International students must cover visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs themselves.

Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a UK 1st or 2.1 honours degree or international equivalent. A master’s degree is advantageous. Suitable backgrounds include materials science, chemistry, engineering, or related disciplines, with an interest in experimental research. Experience in cementitious materials, mineral processing, or materials characterisation is helpful but not required. Non-UK applicants not currently studying in the UK must meet the English language requirement before the deadline.

The expected start date is 04 October 2027, with an alternative start date possible by agreement. Applications must be submitted through the University of Bath online PhD application form for Civil Engineering, and applicants should follow the project-specific instructions carefully, including selecting University of Bath URSA in the funding section and entering the project title and lead supervisor name exactly as requested.

What's required

Applicants must have, or be about to obtain, a UK Honours degree at 1st or 2.1 level, or an international equivalent. A master’s-level qualification would be advantageous. A background in materials science, chemistry, engineering, or a related discipline is expected, with a strong interest in experimental research. Experience in cementitious materials, mineral processing, or materials characterisation is beneficial but not essential. Non-UK applicants not currently studying in the UK must meet the programme’s English language requirement before the deadline.

How to apply

Apply formally through the University of Bath online PhD application form for Civil Engineering. Enter the project title and the lead supervisor’s name exactly as instructed, and select University of Bath URSA in the Funding Your Studies section. You may apply for up to two projects on this programme, but must follow the specified fields carefully to avoid processing errors.
