About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in modelling soil dewatering and recharge for cost-effective and climate-resilient infrastructure.
The project focuses on soil physics, geotechnical engineering, groundwater control, pore pressures, wetting and dewetting processes, and the interaction between soil water movement and climate-driven seasonal change. Research questions include vacuum-induced depressurisation in low-permeability soils, recharge of soils and waste landfills, clogging and fine-particle movement, and the feasibility of controlled water abstraction/injection to mitigate shrink-swell problems in clay embankments.
You will develop new mathematical models of soil wetting and dewetting, investigate microscale and pore-scale processes, consider the role of plants, and assess engineered mitigation strategies for volume-sensitive soils.
Eligibility: UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in engineering, physics, chemistry, or mathematics. English language qualification is required if applicable.
Funding: The project is funded by a Wolfson Fellowship supporting university-funded studentships.
How to apply: Submit an online application through the University of Southampton portal. Choose Research, 2026/27, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, then Full time or Part time, and search for programme PhD Engineering & the Environment (7175). Add the supervisor name in section 2 and include your CV, two academic references, transcripts/certificates, and English language qualification if applicable.
Deadline: 30 September 2026.
