About this position

This project is part of an ERC Advanced Grant on inertial dense suspensions (IDeS), focusing on dense particle-laden flows that appear in applications such as blood flow, recycling, waste slurry transport, additive manufacturing, and energy storage. The research aims to improve understanding of flow behavior that does not fit neatly into laminar or turbulent categories.
The PhD researcher will use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and velocimetry to measure velocity and concentration profiles in opaque suspensions. The work will contribute experimental data to a broader team effort and support the development of theoretical models for predicting dense suspension flows. A dedicated MRI facility is available, and no prior MRI experience is required.
The position is hosted in the Process & Energy department within TU Delft’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The role includes experimental research, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at conferences, and mentoring BSc and MSc students. Professional development courses are also offered.
Eligibility highlights: MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field; strong background in multiphase fluid dynamics; experimental research experience; image/data processing skills in Python or Matlab; and strong English proficiency.

What's required
Applicants should have an MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field. A strong foundation in multiphase fluid dynamics is required, along with proven experimental experience and a drive to explore and improve state-of-the-art techniques. Image/data processing skills in Python or Matlab are expected, as well as proficiency in written and spoken English. Prior MRI experience is not required, but willingness to push the boundaries of velocimetry is essential.
