Eindhoven University of Technology is seeking a PhD candidate for a project focused on multiscale and multiphysics modelling of sustainable fibrous composites, with a particular emphasis on uncertainty quantification and machine learning. The research addresses the performance prediction of natural fiber-reinforced composites, which are increasingly used as sustainable alternatives in construction, automotive, and consumer products. These materials present challenges due to their sensitivity to moisture, chemical degradation, and variability in composition and microstructure, leading to complex mechanical, thermal, and diffusion properties.
The project will involve developing numerical models for the coupled mechanical-diffusive-thermal-chemical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites at the micro/meso-scale, incorporating uncertainty via stochastic inputs and analyzing responses using Monte Carlo simulations. Candidates may also work on Bayesian inference for model parameter variability, stochastic homogenization, uncertainty propagation, and integrating machine learning techniques to accelerate simulations while preserving uncertainty information.
The successful candidate will join the chair of Applied Mechanics in the Department of the Built Environment, supervised by Dr. Emanuela Bosco and Dr. Payam Poorsolhjouy (Eindhoven University of Technology), and Dr. Lars Beex (University of Luxembourg). The position is part of the Graduate School of Engineering Mechanics, offering advanced training and close interaction with other PhD students working on related topics.
Applicants should have a MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Mathematical Engineering, or a related field, with strong skills in mechanics of materials, multiscale and multiphysics methods. Experience in uncertainty quantification and machine learning is advantageous. Excellent English communication skills (C1 level) are required.
The position offers full-time employment for four years, a competitive salary (€3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid parental leave, and support for international candidates.
