About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands on numerical modelling of subsurface erosion in dikes and geothermal wells. This project addresses hidden soil failure processes that can lead to serious damage in buried infrastructure, including backward erosion piping in dikes and sand production in geothermal boreholes.

The research combines advanced finite element modelling, coupled hydro-mechanical erosion models, and small- and medium-scale laboratory experiments. The aim is to improve understanding and prediction of internal erosion processes by studying the effects of soil properties, flow paths, and scale. The project is intended to produce practical prediction tools for engineering use and to contribute to safer flood protection and more reliable geothermal energy systems.

You will be based in the chairs of Applied Mechanics and Engineering Thermodynamics for Energy Systems at TU/e and work closely with experts in numerical simulations, soil mechanics, and geotechnical modelling. The project is embedded in the BEHeaT program on subsurface heat extraction within the Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES), linking with the Built Environment and Mechanical Engineering departments and supporting broader energy transition goals.

The position is a full-time PhD employment for four years with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The salary is in scale P under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, with a gross monthly base salary of €3,204 to €4,051 (full-time), plus an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus. TU/e also offers pension coverage, leave options, training support, commuting/home-working allowances, and other employment benefits.

Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, preferably with specialization in Applied Mechanics or Computational Mechanics, a research-oriented mindset, and English at C1 level.
