About this position
PhD position at Delft University of Technology in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment on nature-inclusive school renovation with biobased materials.
The project, School Greenovation, is a NWO-KIC Nature-based Solutions research project supervised by Associate Professor Thaleia Konstantinou and Assistant Professor Olga Ioannou. It explores how school refurbishment can improve climate resilience, reduce CO₂ emissions, lower long-term operational costs, and create healthier learning environments.
The research takes a whole-systems approach to renovation, linking materials, biodiversity, and child development. It focuses on circular and biobased materials, regenerative sustainability, participatory design, and the integration of flora, fauna, and microbiomes into school buildings as dynamic local ecosystems.
Key activities include mapping state-of-the-art nature-inclusive and climate-resilient approaches, assessing demonstrator buildings, developing refurbishment strategies with stakeholders, translating strategies into renovation guidelines, creating scaled models and 1:1 prototypes, and contributing to publications and international conferences.
This is a four-year funded PhD leading to a doctoral degree from TU Delft. The candidate will join a transdisciplinary consortium of 15+ members and participate in real-life experimentation in three school buildings in the Netherlands. Teaching contributions within the faculty are modest.
Eligibility highlights: an MSc in Building Sciences or a closely related field, demonstrated knowledge of biobased design and energy efficiency, strong research and communication skills in English, and the ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams. Dutch language skills are helpful but not required.
Application deadline: 27 September 2026. Apply online and upload the requested documents, including CV, motivation letter, research statement, transcripts, thesis materials, proof of English proficiency, and two references.
