About this position

PhD opportunity at the John Innes Centre within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership.

This project, “From Defence to Antibiotic production: Uncovering New Roles for NLR Signalling in Multicellular Bacteria”, explores how nucleotide-binding and oligomerisation domain-like receptors (NLRs) function in Streptomyces beyond phage defence. The research aims to uncover broader roles in multicellular development, complex signalling networks, and the regulation of natural products and antibiotic biosynthesis.

You will combine computational biology and experimental microbiology to mine the Streptomyces “NLRome”, model candidate proteins, and use synthetic activation tools to test effects on bacterial viability, phage immunity, morphological development, and antibiotic production. Training includes genome mining, structural modelling (AlphaFold, Foldseek), pipeline development, phenotyping, heterologous expression, phage assays, genetic engineering, protein-protein interaction studies, catalytic assays, transcriptomics, and metabolomics.

The project is based at the John Innes Centre and offers a collaborative research environment with access to world-class platform facilities. The post is suitable for a motivated student interested in bridging bioinformatics, molecular microbiology, genetics, protein biochemistry, and omics.

Funding & eligibility: Home and Overseas applicants are eligible. No stipend amount is stated on the page.

Deadline: 30 November 2026. Start date: 1 October 2027.

Informal enquiries: Prof Susan Schlimpert ([email protected]).
