About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in Evolutionary Genomics of Mimicry in Neotropical Catfishes, hosted by the School of Biological Sciences and supervised by Dr Martin Taylor.

This project explores how mimicry evolves in Neotropical Corydoradinae catfishes, using comparative and population genomics to study repeated origins of similar colour patterns across more than 30 mimicry communities in South America. The research asks which genomic regions show divergent selection, whether species within the same mimicry ring show signatures of recent positive selection and selective sweeps, whether pigmentation genes evolve faster in mimetic species, and how predictable adaptive evolution is across independent mimicry origins.

Students will work with a chromosome-level reference genome, annotated genome assemblies, RNA-seq datasets, and whole-genome resequencing data. Methods include population genomics, comparative genomics, phylogenomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, UNIX/Linux, high-performance computing, and programming in R and Python. Most samples are already available in the host laboratory, with possible collaborative fieldwork in South America.

Eligibility: applicants should have or expect a First or Upper Second-Class degree (UK 2:1 equivalent) in Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Evolutionary Biology, Zoology, or a related discipline. A strong interest in evolutionary biology and genomics is expected; bioinformatics or programming experience is helpful but not required.

Funding: competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide. The listing does not specify stipend amount or exact tuition coverage.

Language requirement: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category. The page also indicates a funded PhD project for students worldwide.

Location: Norwich, United Kingdom. Start date: 1 October 2027. Apply by registering your interest on the FindAPhD project page.
