About this position

Empa is advertising a fully funded PhD position in nonlinear vibrational metamaterials within the Laboratory for Acoustics/Noise Control. The project sits at the intersection of mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, nonlinear dynamics, vibroacoustics, and experimental vibration testing.

The doctoral project focuses on a new generation of nonlinear resonators whose dynamic behaviour changes with vibration amplitude. The aim is to develop efficient models and design rules for nonlinear metamaterials that can enable adaptive vibration isolation, frequency conversion, and non-reciprocal wave propagation. Research methods include analytical modelling, finite-element simulations, prototype development, laser vibrometry, modal analysis, and experimental characterization.

The successful candidate will work in a collaborative Swiss-French project involving Empa, ETH Zürich, and LAUM, with the core of the PhD conducted at Empa and at least one research secondment in Le Mans. The post also includes enrolment as a PhD student at ETH Zürich and access to doctoral training through the ETH Doctoral School.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a master’s degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics obtained no longer than four years ago and with above-average performance. Strong English skills are required. Prior experience in structural/nonlinear dynamics, finite element modelling, or experimental acoustics is expected, along with a structured research style, the ability to interpret technical literature, and readiness to work collaboratively and present results regularly.

Funding: the position is fully funded for 4 years.

Location: Empa’s main campus is in Dübendorf, near Zürich, Switzerland.

Application: apply online only via the job portal. Submit a motivation letter, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two referees. Applications by email or post will not be considered.
