About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Birmingham in the School of Chemical Engineering with Dr Theodoros Papalas.

This fully funded 3-year studentship focuses on novel sorption-enhanced and chemical looping processes for low-temperature hydrogen production and carbon capture. The project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, catalysis, materials science, and sustainable energy, with strong relevance to decarbonisation, reaction engineering, and process intensification.

Research activities include synthesis of materials with CO2 capture, redox, and catalytic functionalities; material characterisation using XRD, N2 adsorption, microscopy, temperature-programmed techniques, XPS, and synchrotron-based analysis; and performance testing in thermogravimetric analyser and fixed-bed reactor experiments. The project also considers techno-economic assessment and life cycle assessment for industrial implementation.

Eligibility highlights: a BSc, MEng, or MSc (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Energy Engineering, or a related discipline. Strong motivation for research in hydrogen technologies, sustainable energy, and decarbonisation is important; laboratory experience is helpful but not required.

Funding: fully funded 3-year PhD studentship.

How to apply: email Dr Theodoros Papalas at [email protected] with your CV and academic transcript. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an informal interview.

Deadline: 15 August 2026.
