About this position
Doctoral Researcher in Optical Satellite Communications at the University of Luxembourg, within the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) and the SIGCOM research group.
This PhD project is an industrial doctoral position in collaboration with SES. The research focuses on high-capacity coherent optical feeder links for ground-to-satellite communication, with emphasis on atmospheric impairments, link availability, scalable high-data-rate transmission, and future optical satellite infrastructure.
Research topics include turbulence-induced fading, scintillation, beam wander, wavefront distortions, cloud and aerosol impacts, physical-layer modeling, mitigation techniques for coherent optical uplinks, adaptive modulation and coding, diversity schemes, advanced receiver processing, simulation frameworks, and system-level trade-offs for optical terminal and network performance.
Applicants should hold an MSc or MEng in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Photonics, Applied Physics, or a closely related field. Strong preparation in digital communications, signal processing, applied mathematics, and simulation/programming is expected. Experience with optical communication systems, free-space optical communication, atmospheric propagation, or satellite communications is a strong advantage.
The position is based at the Kirchberg Campus in Luxembourg. It is a fixed-term full-time doctoral contract for 36 months, extendable up to 48 months if required. The yearly gross salary is EUR 41,976.
Applicants must demonstrate at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis. To apply, submit a CV, cover letter, and transcript of university-level courses through the online HR system. Applications are reviewed upon receipt, so early application is encouraged.
