About this position

PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Transport and Logistics section of the Department of Engineering Systems and Services, Faculty of Technology, Policy & Management.

The project focuses on optimizing multi-actor transport and logistics systems, with research at the intersection of operations research, game theory, and mixed-integer optimization. The successful candidate will develop new theory, mathematical models, and scalable algorithms for planning and operating systems where multiple actors have interacting and potentially conflicting objectives.

Methodological topics include mathematical programming, mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), column generation, branch-and-price, and Benders decomposition. The work may extend beyond transport and logistics to other multi-actor decision problems.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in operations research, econometrics, applied mathematics, computer science, industrial engineering, systems and control, or a closely related field; strong background in optimization and mixed-integer programming; excellent programming skills (Python, Julia, Java, or C++); strong English writing and communication skills; collaborative and interdisciplinary mindset. Knowledge of game theory, bi-level optimization, and decomposition methods is a plus.

Funding and conditions: 4-year doctoral employment in principle, with an initial 1.5-year contract and a 2.5-year extension subject to progress. Salary ranges from €3204 to €4051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and a work costs contribution.

Application deadline: 22 November 2026. Apply online with a CV and motivational letter via the application button. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed.

Contact person: Patrick Stokkink ([email protected]).
