This competition-funded PhD project focuses on precision tracking for neutrino measurements in FASER, with a strong emphasis on neutrino physics, tau neutrinos, particle physics, and detector development at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC).

The project will use the full Run 3 dataset from FASER to study high-energy neutrino interactions and perform precision measurements of tau neutrino production and interactions. A major research component is the development of advanced reconstruction methods that combine information from the electronic spectrometer, Interface Tracker, and nuclear emulsion detector systems to improve track matching, vertex reconstruction, and decay topology reconstruction.

In parallel with the physics analysis, the student will contribute to next-generation electronic neutrino detector development for the HL-LHC, including optimisation of tracking and reconstruction performance and support for detector design and prototyping.

Eligibility: open to UK and international students via Manchester; Chinese nationals (Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong) should apply via Tsinghua University. Applicants should have a relevant 2:1 honours degree or equivalent, or a relevant 2:1 plus a Master’s at merit; Tsinghua entry requires a master’s-level degree certificate at merit/distinction or an MPhys/MChem/MEng (2:1 and above) or equivalent. English language competency is required, typically IELTS 6.5 overall with minimum sub-scores as stated in the advert.

Funding: fees waived at both universities; Manchester students receive the UKRI minimum stipend (£21,805 in 2026/27) for up to two years in Manchester, a flight allowance for travel to Tsinghua, and up to £5000 annual research training grant. CLS funding is needed for the Tsinghua period, with accommodation guaranteed for successful CLS applicants.
