About this position

Monash University Malaysia is advertising a fully funded PhD project in Quantum-Secured Fiber Bragg Grating sensing over shared optical fiber networks for smart infrastructure. The project sits at the intersection of Electrical Engineering, Physics, Information Technology, and Computer Science, with strong relevance to optical fiber sensing, quantum key distribution (QKD), cybersecurity, and network optimization.

The research focuses on integrating Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing systems with quantum communication channels over shared optical fiber infrastructure. Key challenges include Raman scattering noise, crosstalk, optical interference, wavelength allocation, and signal attenuation. The project will explore multiplexing architectures, noise mitigation, adaptive channel allocation, and intelligent network management to improve coexistence between sensing and quantum-secured communication.

Planned methods include theoretical modeling, simulation, and laboratory-scale experimental validation. Potential application areas include railway structural health monitoring, bridge and tunnel safety, smart energy infrastructure, industrial IoT networks, and smart city monitoring platforms.

This is a Competition Funded PhD Project for students worldwide. Funding notes state that successful applicants will receive the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES), which provides a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for up to 3 years 6 months. Eligibility requires at least First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent recognised by Monash University Malaysia, plus the required English language level.

Supervision is led by Associate Professor Ir Dr Shee Yu Gang at Monash University, with associate supervisors Associate Professor Ir Joanne Lim Mun Yee and Prof Dato' Dr Ir Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan. An external supervisor, Professor Dr Gong-Ru Lin of National Taiwan University, is also listed.

To apply, first contact the main supervisor with your academic background and achievements to confirm fit. If suitable, submit your application through the project application link and ensure you use the same research topic title as advertised.
