About this position
Chalmers University of Technology is advertising a fully funded doctoral position in joint optical communications and sensing within the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Division of Communications, Antennas, and Optical Networks (CAOS) in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The project focuses on developing new methods for integrated sensing and communications in optical networks. The research combines optical fiber communications, optical sensing, machine learning, signal analysis, and network-wide optimization. A central idea is to use deployed optical networks both for high-capacity communications and as large-scale sensors capable of detecting environmental changes and external perturbations. The work includes cutting-edge machine learning for sensing data analysis, modeling the impact of external phenomena on optical signals, and optimizing transmission and sensing parameters as well as resource assignment across the network.
The doctoral student will take advanced courses in the Graduate School of Electrical Engineering, develop scientific ideas, and communicate research results in writing and orally. The position may also include teaching or other duties corresponding to up to 20% of working hours, which can extend the appointment from four to five years.
Applicants must have a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, communication engineering, computer science, or a similar field. For those educated outside Sweden, a four-year bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong English communication skills are required, together with experience in programming, mathematical modeling, and simulation. Experience in machine learning, optical sensing technologies, and software-defined communication systems is considered highly valuable.
The position is fully funded from the start and includes a starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month (valid from May 1, 2026). The doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date if applicable. Chalmers provides employee benefits, a dynamic research environment, and support for relocation and settling in Gothenburg.
The application deadline is October 10, 2026. Applications must be submitted in English through the online form and should include a CV, personal letter, motivation, and degree-related thesis documents and transcripts. Contact for questions: Marija Furdek, Associate professor, [email protected].
