About this position

PhD opportunity at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS), London, United Kingdom

This funded PhD project, “Mutate, model, predict: uncovering how regulatory elements encode gene expression dynamics,” brings together developmental biology, genomics, human genetics, bioinformatics, statistics, and mathematical modelling. The project asks how non-coding cis-regulatory elements control when, where, and how strongly genes are expressed during development.

You will work across three complementary labs/supervisors: Dr Vicki Metzis, Dr Ruben Perez-Carrasco, and Dr J Ware at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences. The research combines embryonic stem cell models, perturbation experiments, mechanistic modelling, and analysis of population genetics datasets to uncover sequence rules that govern regulatory behaviour and to predict how DNA changes alter gene expression dynamics.

The project is especially suited to students interested in quantitative biology, applied mathematics, applied statistics, data analysis, developmental biology, genomics, and molecular genetics. It aims to improve understanding of developmental gene regulation and interpretation of non-coding variation in the human genome.

Funding: full tuition fees plus a tax-free stipend of £26,500 per year, paid monthly. Funding is available for both Home and Overseas students.

How to apply: follow the LMS application instructions and submit the application form via the LMS studentships page. Registering interest on FindAPhD is not an application.
