About this position
PhD opportunity at UNSW Sydney in DNA nanotechnology, synthetic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and polymer chemistry.
This funded PhD project, supervised by Dr Felix Rizzuto in the School of Chemistry at UNSW Sydney, focuses on “rewiring” the DNA backbone to create programmable materials. The project aims to attach functional molecules directly to the DNA backbone so DNA can be densely modified and used to build responsive nanostructures such as micelles, droplets, and fibres.
The research will examine how backbone-bound groups affect DNA structure, molecular recognition, and self-assembly. Functional motifs may include hydrophobic, photoresponsive, catalytic, or recognition groups. The candidate will combine synthetic and bioconjugation chemistry with spectroscopy, microscopy, chromatography, and DNA nanotechnology.
Funding is stated as a fully funded scholarship at the UNSW rate of $39,206 per annum for 3.5 years.
Eligibility highlights: domestic or international students with degrees in Chemistry, Biotechnology, Nanoscience, or related disciplines; applicants should meet UNSW HDR admission requirements, including at least 9 months of research experience and a thesis or comparable written work. Strong organic/supramolecular chemistry skills are preferred, and experience with machine learning or AI methods is an advantage.
How to apply: email Dr Felix Rizzuto directly with the subject line Prospective PhD for DNA nanotechnology. Include your background, experience, research interests, expected completion date, possible PhD start date, CV, transcripts, and two references.
No formal deadline is listed in the post.
