About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in Robotic Monitoring for Place Recognition and Change Detection in Dynamic Underwater Environments.
This project sits at the intersection of robotics, computer vision, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistics, and marine sciences. The research develops novel robotic mapping and AI methods to detect subtle changes in dynamic seafloor environments over large spatial scales. You will work on accurate localisation, high-resolution sensing, probabilistic modelling, and feature detection for robust alignment of repeat underwater surveys in GNSS-denied environments.
The project is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. Validation will include simulation, controlled tank experiments, and datasets collected with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The project is part of the EU-funded BlueOcean Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network, offering interdisciplinary training and collaboration with leading European institutions and industry partners. Secondments are included with CNR (Italy) and Voyis Imaging (Canada), and there is collaboration with PhD students at NTNU (Norway).
Funding: fully funded for UK, EU, and international students. Tuition fees are paid and a tax-free living stipend is provided.
Eligibility: applicants need a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent.
