About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia (Norwich, United Kingdom) in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Remote Sensing, Data Science, and Environmental Science.

This funded PhD project, supervised by Dr M Mackiewicz in the School of Computing Sciences, focuses on multispectral and hyperspectral imaging for the aerial detection and monitoring of marine litter. The project aims to improve automated classification and quantification of litter materials using deep learning, spectral measurements, and robust machine-learning methods that can handle changing illumination and different sensors.

You will work with labelled visible-light images and laboratory spectral data spanning approximately 380 to 1650 nm, characterise litter materials, curate imaging datasets, and develop models for material detection and classification. The research also explores device-independent representations, transfer learning, domain adaptation, and translation into practical drone-based monitoring systems.

Training will be provided in imaging principles, laboratory measurement, computer vision, deep learning, geospatial analysis, and experimental design. You will be based in the Colour & Imaging Laboratory and collaborate closely with scientists and engineers at CEFAS. Fieldwork opportunities, including drone-flying, may be available.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have at least a UK-equivalent 2:1 bachelor’s degree and a background in a scientific, quantitative, or computational field. Students from computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, environmental science, or biological science are encouraged to apply. IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category is required.

This is a competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide. The start date is 1 October 2027, and the page indicates a register-interest application process via FindAPhD.
