About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology for a candidate interested in geospatial technologies, spatial planning, information systems, and sustainability transitions in agrifood systems.

The project is part of the NWO-KIC RISE programme, which addresses the urgent need for biodiversity restoration and nature-inclusive change in agriculture and horticulture. The PhD will be hosted by the Department of the Built Environment at TU/e and embedded in an interdisciplinary, cross-university team working with Wageningen University & Research, Leiden University, and Inholland University of Applied Sciences, as well as societal partners from agriculture, horticulture, policy, water management, regional development, and civil society.

The specific focus of this position is spatial system mapping and decision-support design. The successful candidate will co-develop an interactive spatial decision-support framework that helps stakeholders evaluate how landscape conditions, land-use choices, and regional features influence the feasibility of biodiversity-enhancing practices. The work combines geospatial modelling, participatory mapping, interactive workshops, and system dynamics logic to connect spatial configurations with broader socio-ecological-economic dynamics.

Key tasks include co-creating integrated regional maps, constructing an interactive decision-support framework, linking temporal simulation models to spatial settings, facilitating stakeholder scenario workshops, and translating findings into technology and policy roadmaps. The project will work in case regions in Reusel-Zuid and Oostland Zuid-Holland, with a third region used for validation and replication.

Applicants should have a relevant master’s degree and strong skills or interest in GIS, spatial data analysis, programming, and web development. Experience with mixed-method research, participatory methods, and stakeholder engagement is highly valued. Excellent English is required; Dutch is a strong advantage because of the stakeholder-facing nature of the work.

The appointment is full-time for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is according to Dutch university scale P, with a gross monthly base salary of €3,204 to €4,051, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. TU/e also offers pension contributions, training opportunities, immigration support, and other employment benefits. The application deadline is 2026-09-17, and applications must be submitted online.
