About this position
This PhD position in Statistical Bioinformatics at Eindhoven University of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to advance statistical methodology for biomedical applications. The project focuses on developing latent variable models for multi-omics and longitudinal data, aiming to improve data-driven insights into biological pathways and disease mechanisms. You will join the Statistics group within the cluster Statistics, Probability, and Operations Research (SPOR), which specializes in the development of robust statistical models for complex and dynamic systems. The research is strongly embedded in applications such as anomaly detection, process monitoring, weather and climate forecasting, and statistical bioinformatics.
As a PhD candidate, you will develop methods to assess the goodness-of-fit for latent variable models applied to multiple omics datasets and create flexible models for longitudinal designs. The work involves applying these approaches to both open-source and collaborator-provided datasets, and developing R packages to implement the methods. Your contributions will enhance model assessment and interpretability, supporting advances in diagnosis, treatment selection, and monitoring in healthcare. You will have opportunities to present your research to the statistical community and collaborate with applied domain experts.
The ideal candidate has a strong affinity for mathematics, an interest in biomedical applications, and openness to interdisciplinary collaboration. Requirements include a master’s degree (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field, excellent communication skills, fluency in English (C1 level), and motivation to develop teaching skills and coach students. Experience with biological datasets is beneficial.
Employment conditions include a full-time contract for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. You will spend at least 10% of your time on teaching tasks. The salary is in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (€3,059–€3,881/month), plus a year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%. Additional benefits include a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave, high-quality training programs, excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare and sports facilities, commuting and home working allowances, and a tax compensation scheme (30% facility) for international candidates.
Eindhoven University of Technology is a leading international university located in Brainport Eindhoven, a world-leading tech region. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (M&CS) is one of the largest and most dynamic academic communities in the Netherlands, fostering collaboration with industrial partners and universities worldwide. The university offers a vibrant academic environment with over 13,000 students and 7,000 staff.
To apply, submit your application online via the provided link. Include a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact information for three references.
