About this position
University of Amsterdam (UvA) is offering two PhD positions in the project “Why Are the Super-Rich So Tax-Averse?” within the Department of Political Science and the AISSR PhD programme in the Netherlands.
The project examines why super-rich individuals avoid and evade personal taxation, with two possible research directions: (1) legal tax avoidance through relocation and the political/media discourses around tax flight, and (2) tax evasion through tax havens using the Offshore Leaks Database. The broader themes connect political science, sociology, public policy, governance, political economy, and socio-economic research.
Applicants will develop their own PhD project within the broader Tax Averse framework, building on the project’s central questions while adding their own questions, case studies, or methods. The role includes research, participation in project meetings and workshops, conference presentations, and some teaching (about 10% of working time).
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in political economy, political science, sociology, communication science, or geography depending on the project; strong research talent evidenced by a thesis, article, or research report; qualitative and quantitative skills for Project 1; and causal inference plus quantitative skills for Project 2. GIS, spatial weighting, and social network analysis are desirable for Project 2.
Funding: this is a salaried PhD employment contract, full-time for up to four years, with a gross monthly salary from €3,204 to €4,051, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus.
Deadline: 26 October 2026 at 22:59 UTC. Start date is intended to be 1 January 2027.
How to apply: submit your application through AcademicTransfer with a CV, motivation letter, writing sample, and a research statement of max 2,000 words. Indicate whether you apply for Position 1, Position 2, or both. Contact Marlies Glasius at [email protected] for more information.
