About this position

Utrecht University is advertising a Postdoctoral Researcher position for the Prince Claus Chair on Inclusive Governance, in collaboration with the Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) and the Utrecht School of Governance within the Faculty of Law, Economics & Governance.

The chair theme is “Equity from Within: Maroon Governance and the Future of Development in Suriname.” The postdoctoral researcher will be based in Utrecht, Netherlands, for the period February 2027 to January 2029. The role combines research and organizational support, with roughly half the time dedicated to research and half to chair-related coordination.

Research topics include inclusive governance, traditional governance, post-slavery legacies, development, ethnicity, land rights, sustainable development, female leadership, and the social, economic, and environmental impacts of natural resource use. The project places Maroon communities in Suriname in a comparative global context alongside other traditional societies and African-descended populations.

Responsibilities include designing and conducting research, developing proposals, data collection and analysis, report writing, publishing, and dissemination to academic and public audiences. The postdoc will also support events, international collaboration, visits, workshops, meetings, and book publishing activities related to public governance and administration in Suriname.

The position is co-funded by Utrecht University Fund and IOS. The application deadline is 1 November 2026. Apply through the AcademicTransfer portal using the official vacancy link.
