About this position
Chalmers University of Technology is advertising a PhD position in Thermomechanical Fatigue of Textile Composites within the Division of Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The project focuses on how advanced composite materials behave after millions of load cycles in aeroengine environments. The doctoral researcher will combine experimental testing, advanced simulations, and collaboration with academic and industrial experts to develop reliable methods for predicting the fatigue life of textile carbon fibre composites under thermomechanical tension-tension loading.
Research themes include computational mechanics, materials engineering, finite element methods, continuum mechanics, fibre-reinforced polymers, numerical methods, and programming. The project aims to build an industrially applicable fatigue assessment framework, including ply-level macroscale fatigue modelling, inter-laminar fatigue damage modelling, cycle extrapolation techniques, and evaluation of realistic thermomechanical fatigue cycles for future aeroengine design.
Eligibility requires a Master’s degree in Applied Mechanics, Structural Engineering, Computational Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics, or a related field. Applicants should have strong English communication skills and documented experience in continuum mechanics, advanced FEM, and fibre-reinforced polymer mechanics. Experience with experimental testing, aerospace applications, ANSYS, LS-Dyna, or user subroutines is a plus.
The position is fully funded from the start, with a starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month. It is a four-year appointment, extendable to five years if teaching up to 20% is included. The role also includes advanced doctoral courses in the Graduate School of Solid and Structural Mechanics and teaching at undergraduate level.
Applications must be submitted in English as PDF files through the online application form. Required documents include a CV, personal letter, brief introduction, motivation statement, and bachelor’s and, if available, master’s thesis with transcripts. The deadline is 2026-11-06.

What's required
Applicants must have a Master's degree (120 credits) or a 60-credit Master’s degree in Applied Mechanics, Structural Engineering, Computational Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics, or a similar field; for degrees earned outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal English skills are required. Applicants should have documented experience through education, courses, or a thesis project with high grades in continuum mechanics, advanced finite element methods, and mechanics of fibre-reinforced polymers, plus strong interest and skills in programming and numerical methods. Experience in experimental testing, aerospace applications/aeroengines, and ANSYS or LS-Dyna with user subroutines is considered an advantage.
How to apply
Prepare the application in English as PDF files: CV, personal letter, brief introduction, motivation for the position, and bachelor’s and, if available, master’s thesis together with transcripts. Submit via the application form on the vacancy page; incomplete applications and email submissions will not be considered.
