About this position

PhD opportunity in Cellular and Synaptic Neuroscience at the University of Barcelona, within the research group Membrane Trafficking & Ion Homeostasis in Neuronal Communication in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences / Institute of Neurosciences. The project addresses how synapses adapt to changing neuronal activity by studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of membrane trafficking, ion homeostasis, and intracellular Ca²⁺ signalling, with special attention to the role of intracellular Ca²⁺ stores in synaptic function and neurological disorders.

The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment and receive training in primary neuronal cultures, mouse models, advanced fluorescence imaging, genetically encoded biosensors, and electrophysiology. The research is well suited to students interested in exploring synaptic function from cellular and molecular mechanisms through to neuronal circuits, and to those aiming to build a research career in neuroscience.

This is a PhD position (first-stage researcher), full-time and temporary. The post is open to motivated applicants with a background in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a related field. A relevant Master’s degree is encouraged, and a good command of English is required. Prior lab experience and skills in cell culture, microscopy, image analysis, electrophysiology, or mouse work are advantageous but not essential.

Applications should be sent by email to [email protected] and should include a CV, academic transcripts, and a short motivation letter outlining research interests and motivation to pursue a PhD. Reference details or a reference letter are optional but welcomed. Deadline: 19 October 2026.
