About this position

Universidad de Alcalá is offering a full-time postdoctoral position in the neurobiology of pain within its Department of Systems Biology in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain.

The project focuses on the spinal circuits recruited after optogenetic activation of nociceptive afferent neuron subpopulations and on developing an ex vivo sensitization model using specific patterns of optogenetic stimulation. The work is embedded in an established laboratory environment where the procedures are already routinely implemented.

The successful candidate will carry out mouse spinal cord extraction for ex vivo use, electrophysiological recordings in the spinal cord, and analysis of genetically modified mouse models to study the role of different nociceptor subpopulations in sensitization. The position also involves data analysis, interpretation, and preparation/publication of experimental results.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in neuroscience, biomedicine, neurophysiology, pain, or a related area. Prior experience with electrophysiological recordings, especially patch-clamp methods, and work with neural tissue ex vivo is required. A laboratory animal science training course for personnel working with animals for scientific purposes is also required, along with good English and 1–4 years of research experience.

Terms and funding: the contract runs for 15 months and offers a gross salary of 2,210 EUR per month (26,520 EUR annually, bonuses included). The post is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and starts on 1 March 2027. The employer also notes potential interest in exploring funding options to extend the contract and support new research projects.

Application: deadline is 15 January 2027 at 15:00 (Europe/Madrid). Applications are submitted via the Universidad de Alcalá job portal linked in the posting. The selection process includes CV review and possible interview.
