About this position

PhD opportunity in patient-specific coronary stent biomechanics at the Computational Mechanics and Materials Lab (CMM Lab), OTH Regensburg, Germany. This project is part of STENTIQ, a funded initiative developing a validated digital-twin platform that combines high-fidelity finite-element simulations, experiments, machine-learning surrogate models, and physics-informed AI for coronary stent behavior.

The doctoral research focuses on the mechanical foundation of the platform. The successful candidate will investigate how anatomy, material behaviour, stent design, and implantation parameters affect the interaction between the stent, balloon, and arterial wall, including expansion, recoil, cyclic loading, and long-term structural integrity.

Research tasks include developing and verifying 3D nonlinear finite-element models of the stent–balloon–artery system, automating model generation and post-processing, analysing contact and vessel-wall loading, studying convergence and parameter sensitivity, planning experiments, and calibrating/validating models with measurements. The project also involves building a quality-assured simulation database for ML surrogate modelling and optimisation.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree or university Diplom in mechanical engineering, computational engineering, biomedical engineering, applied mechanics, or a related field. Strong knowledge of solid mechanics, FEM, and material modelling is expected, together with experience in nonlinear simulations and programming, ideally Python. Very good English is essential; German is an advantage.

The position is a Research Associate with PhD opportunity, TV-L E13, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. Start is as soon as possible, with a contract until 30 September 2029. Apply by 1 November 2026.

Application tip from the post: describe one modelling or simulation project, your own contribution, and how you verified the results. Full details and the application portal are available via the link provided in the post.
