About this position

PhD Researcher Position: 3D Printed Synthetic Cells for Chemical Communication at the Walther Lab, University of Mainz, Germany.

This PhD project focuses on building a new route to synthetic cells and their spatial organization through high-resolution 3D printing. The research combines systems chemistry, advanced microfabrication, polymer chemistry, and quantitative microscopy to engineer chemical communication between synthetic cell units via pH waves. The long-term goal is to reach sustained oscillations and collective behavior across synthetic cell consortia.

Planned research tasks include developing enzyme-compatible, pH-responsive hydrogel resins for two-photon lithography; 3D printing of synthetic-cell units and 3D tissues; integrating pH-feedback systems such as urease, glucose oxidase, and enzymatic cascades; and investigating communication and synchronization phenomena in synthetic-cell communities. The project also offers opportunities to work on reaction–diffusion simulations to rationalize and predict system behavior.

The position is embedded in the Walther Lab at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, linked to the Max Planck Graduate Center between MPI for Polymer Research and JGU. The lab is internationally known for work at the interface of systems chemistry, chemical reaction networks, DNA nanoscience, polymer materials, and cell-like systems. The group offers strong in-house expertise in 3D printing, pH-feedback systems, and modeling, along with access to excellent lab infrastructure including a state-of-the-art 3D printer and analytical facilities.

Funding is provided through a German TV-L 13 position at 65% with full social benefits. The starting date is 1 October 2026, with flexibility, and the application deadline is 30 September 2026. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Applicants should hold a very good Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or Materials Science. Strong interest in microfabrication and 3D printing is expected; prior experience with hydrogels, enzymes, polymer synthesis, or microscopy is advantageous. Excellent English skills, an independent working style, enthusiasm for basic research, and teamwork are important.
