About this position
The International PhD Programme (IPP) Mainz is offering a fully funded PhD position in the research group of René Ketting at the Institute of Molecular Biology in Mainz, Germany. The project is part of a lively, international life sciences environment with more than 200 PhD students from 44 countries and access to state-of-the-art core facilities and advanced training in scientific techniques and professional skills.
This PhD project focuses on controlling transposable elements and understanding the target specificity of small RNA pathways in germ cells. Transposons are genetic elements that can destabilize genomes, and germ cells have evolved sophisticated defense systems to suppress them. A central theme of the project is how small non-coding RNAs, Argonaute proteins, and related silencing mechanisms regulate transposon activity and genome integrity.
Two major research directions are highlighted. First, the project explores how transcription termination couples to small RNA biogenesis, using genetics and genomics approaches, including RNA-seq and direct RNA sequencing, to identify factors and genomic features that influence pathway choice. Second, the project studies germ granules and phase separation through microscopy and biochemistry, with an emphasis on understanding how these membraneless organelles form, recruit proteins, and function in RNA regulation. The work is highly interdisciplinary and includes CRISPR-Cas genome editing, protein purification, microscopy, genetics, bioinformatics, and, in collaboration with partner labs, structure prediction and determination.
The position is suitable for an ambitious Master’s-level candidate with a strong interest in biology, molecular genetics, RNA biology, and interdisciplinary experimental research. English is the working language. Applicants must provide two letters of reference. The deadline for applications is 15 October 2026, with interviews planned for 18 and 19 January 2027 in Mainz. The expected starting window is between 1 February and 31 July 2027.
