About this position
The International PhD Programme (IPP) Mainz and the Institute of Molecular Biology invite applications for a fully funded PhD position in the research group of Edward Lemke.
The project, titled High Resolution Fluorescence Imaging of Protein Plasticity, focuses on the behavior of intrinsically disordered proteins in higher eukaryotes and their roles in vital cellular processes such as transcription, nuclear transport, and healthy ageing. The work addresses an important and still poorly understood area of biology: how dynamic protein systems organize into microphase-separated, sub-resolution structures that may influence processes such as transcriptional regulation.
The project is highly interdisciplinary and combines single-molecule methods, microfluidics, super-resolution techniques, and chemical/synthetic biology tools. The group is interested in quantitative single-molecule and super-resolution-based technologies to study protein dynamics in complex cellular contexts.
This opportunity is especially well suited to candidates with backgrounds in physics, biophysics, polymer science, or physical chemistry, particularly those with computational training and a strong interest in biosciences. Applicants from biology or biochemistry are also encouraged, especially if they want to move into quantitative science. Extensive training will be provided, and the programme explicitly welcomes candidates with little or no prior experimental biosciences experience, provided they have strong motivation and curiosity.

The position is based in Mainz, Germany, and is part of a lively international PhD community with more than 200 students from 44 countries.
