About this position
Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC), Jena, Germany, is advertising a postdoctoral scientist position in atmospheric inverse modeling to constrain high-latitude greenhouse gas budgets. The project focuses on the Arctic and boreal carbon cycle, with particular attention to methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, permafrost-related processes, landscape disturbance, and links between land-surface dynamics and atmospheric greenhouse-gas mixing ratios.
The successful candidate will work on maintaining and upgrading the global inverse-modeling framework CarboScope, running regional inversions, and integrating multiple data streams such as surface observations, airborne measurements, isotopic datasets, and satellite retrievals. The role is embedded in a multidisciplinary project funded by the German Ministry for Research, Technology and Space and connected to broader efforts such as the Global Carbon Project.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in atmospheric or natural sciences (for example meteorology, geo-ecology, geo-science, or environmental physics) is required. Applicants should have experience with surface-atmosphere exchange processes, atmospheric transport modeling, greenhouse-gas time-series interpretation, and inverse optimization techniques. Scientific programming skills are a strong advantage, and knowledge of Arctic ecology or carbon cycle science is beneficial. Very good written and spoken English is essential.
Funding and terms: this is a full-time salaried postdoctoral appointment for 12 months, initially starting from 2027-01-01 and no later than 2027-04-01. The position is graded under TVöD Bund and includes a pension plan via VBL; part-time work is generally possible.
How to apply: send a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV, and names/contact details of two references. Apply by email to [email protected] and quote reference number 10/2026. The deadline is 2026-11-10.
