About this position
PhD Position: Flexibility in Nuclear Power at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Process & Energy department.
This PhD project explores how small modular reactors (SMRs) and nuclear power can support a CO2-neutral energy system with high shares of wind and solar. The research focuses on advanced power cycles, with or without thermal energy storage, to improve load-following and reduce grid congestion. You will use numerical techniques to couple transient power cycle modelling with nuclear reactor modelling and study feedback effects to the reactor under different operating scenarios.
The work is embedded in a strong research environment at TU Delft, with collaboration between the Process & Energy department, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, and the Reactor Institute Delft. The project is highly multidisciplinary and connects thermodynamics, transport equations, energy systems, and nuclear engineering.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have ample experience in thermodynamic system modelling, especially transient modelling; an MSc in physics, mechanical engineering, or a similar field; strong affinity with thermodynamics and transport equations; interest in the nuclear industry; and good communication/teamwork skills. A knowledge embargo exemption is required for this vacancy, and English proficiency is expected for TU Delft PhD study.
Funding: this is a paid doctoral employment position for 4 years in principle, with salary from €3204 to €4051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus.
Application deadline: 15 November 2026. Apply online with a CV and motivational letter via the TU Delft application button. Applications by email or post will not be processed.
