About this position

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a PhD position in genome evolution and architecture in unicellular eukaryotes within the Laboratory of Microbiology and the Genome Evolution and Dynamics in Eukaryotes (GEDE) group. The project is led by Dr. Jolien van Hooff and co-supervised by Dr. Ursula Oggenfuss.

This PhD focuses on genome evolution, genome architecture, 3D chromosome folding, bioinformatics, phylogenetics, and the study of understudied unicellular eukaryotes / protists. The successful candidate will use computational approaches and new genomic data to investigate how large-scale and small-scale genome structures shape evolution, diversification, and origins of eukaryotes. There may also be opportunities to work with eukaryotic microbes in the wet lab.

Applicants should have an MSc degree in Biology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, or a related field by the start date. The post asks for experience with biological datasets, programming in Python and/or R, or bioinformatics analyses; knowledge of genome-wide analyses and phylogenetics is preferred. Strong curiosity, independence, organization, teamwork, and good written and verbal communication skills are required. English at C1 level is expected.

The position is fully funded. Salary starts at €3,204 per month in year 1 and rises to €4,051 per month in year 4, with a temporary 18-month contract that can be extended for the project duration if performance is good. The role is based in Wageningen, Netherlands.

To apply, use the apply button on the vacancy page and submit a CV (max. 2 pages) plus a motivation letter (max. 1 page). The total application package must not exceed 3 pages. Applications are accepted until 2026-11-02.
