About this position

A fully funded 36-month PhD position is available at the University of Bordeaux (France) in collaboration with UCLouvain (Belgium), focusing on the high-throughput synthesis of inorganic materials. The project is part of the ERC Synergy project GEMPROMISE and is hosted at the Institut de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux (ICMCB CNRS), with additional involvement from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland.

The research will center on the high-throughput synthesis and characterization of a specific family of inorganic materials, with a strong emphasis on developing high-throughput characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy. The project also involves the development of methodologies for analyzing the resulting data, including the use of DFT and machine learning techniques.

The successful candidate will spend most of their time in Bordeaux, with a three-month research stay at UCLouvain. The PhD will be co-supervised by Cyril Aymonier (Université de Bordeaux) and Gian-Marco Rignanese (UCLouvain). The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, offering opportunities to collaborate with leading European research groups in materials chemistry and condensed matter science.

Applicants should have a strong background in solid-state chemistry or materials science, with a Master's degree in a relevant field. Experience in crystallography, crystal chemistry, and programming (especially Python) is required, and familiarity with machine learning is desirable. Proficiency in English is also necessary.
