About this position
PhD position in hybrid quantum systems at Atominstitut, TU Wien in Austria. The project is part of an international collaboration between TU Wien and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) on the newly funded FWF project Intrinsic Losses in Hybrid Systems with Cryogenic Solids.
The research focuses on quantum mechanics, experimental quantum physics, superconducting microwave circuits, cryogenic engineering, and materials science. The successful candidate will help design and fabricate superconducting resonators, run and analyze millikelvin experiments on hybrid devices, grow and characterize cryogenic noble-gas crystals, investigate microscopic loss mechanisms in superconducting quantum circuits, and compare measurements with electromagnetic simulations.
This is a fully funded PhD position with a salary of 39.648 € gross/year. The contract is temporary and part-time (30 hours/week). The post is open to candidates with a Master’s degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Quantum Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong laboratory interest, analytical skills, programming experience (Python/MATLAB or similar), and excellent English are required. Experience with superconducting circuits, low-temperature physics, optics, microwave engineering, or nanofabrication is welcome but not mandatory.
To apply, send a single PDF with your CV, cover letter, and contact details for at least two referees to Dr. Elena Redchenko at [email protected] by 2026-08-15. The position is based in Vienna, Austria, and the expected start is in Autumn 2026.
