About this position
Ghent University’s Department of Electronics and Information Systems is offering a full-time PhD position in immersive media representation and 3D computer vision, hosted within the IDLab-MEDIA research group. This interdisciplinary project, in collaboration with imec, aims to advance motion capture, sensor fusion, immersive media, and 3D computer vision technologies. The successful candidate will focus on developing novel methods for photorealistic scene reconstruction and understanding, including 3D reconstruction from multi-view visual data using compact wearable multi-camera setups, and innovative representation techniques such as Gaussian splatting for immersive moving scenes.
The research will also involve computer vision for scene understanding (objects, lighting) using AI algorithms applied to 3D representations, bridging fundamental algorithmic work with practical applications in next-generation immersive technologies like XR, volumetric capture, and interactive 3D content. In addition to research, the doctoral fellow will have opportunities to advise and mentor master’s thesis students, contribute to teaching by guiding assignment sessions in multimedia representation and computer graphics courses, and participate in doctoral training courses to broaden academic skills and network with fellow researchers. The position offers a supportive environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and collaboration within a vibrant research community.
The fellowship is initially for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months upon positive evaluation, with a salary based on university scales, tax-free, and inclusive of staff benefits such as training opportunities, generous holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, possess strong programming skills (Python, C++, or similar), and demonstrate fluency in English.
Experience or interest in computer vision, machine learning, signal processing, and computer graphics is essential. Candidates should be motivated to publish in top-tier venues and contribute to a collaborative, interdisciplinary project. Applications must be submitted online by December 15, 2025, including a CV, diploma, and motivation letter.
