PhD Position in Immersive Media Representation and 3D Computer Vision – Department of Electronics and Information Systems
Ghent University’s Department of Electronics and Information Systems is offering a full-time PhD position in immersive media representation and 3D computer vision, hosted within the renowned IDLab-MEDIA research group. This interdisciplinary project, in collaboration with imec, aims to advance the state of the art in motion capture, sensor fusion, immersive media, and 3D computer vision. The successful candidate will focus on developing novel methods for photorealistic scene reconstruction and understanding, with applications in next-generation media technologies.
The research will involve 3D reconstruction and scene understanding from multi-view visual data, utilizing compact wearable multi-camera setups. You will explore innovative representation methods, such as Gaussian splatting, to achieve photorealistic immersion in dynamic scenes. The project also includes computer vision for scene understanding—identifying objects, lighting, and other features—using AI algorithms that operate on 3D representations. The overarching goal is to bridge fundamental algorithmic research with practical applications in immersive technologies, including XR, volumetric capture, and interactive 3D content.
As a doctoral fellow, you will have opportunities to advise and mentor master’s thesis students, contribute to teaching activities by guiding assignment sessions in multimedia representation and computer graphics, and participate in doctoral training courses offered by Ghent University. These experiences will help you deepen your expertise, broaden your academic skills, and connect with fellow researchers across disciplines.
The position is fully funded for up to 48 months, starting with an initial 12-month contract that can be extended after a positive evaluation. The fellowship amount is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is free of personal income tax. Ghent University offers a comprehensive benefits package, including extensive training and education opportunities, 36 days of annual holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (preferably) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, and possess a strong background or interest in computer vision, machine learning, signal processing, and computer graphics. Good programming skills (Python, C++, or similar) and fluency in English are required. Candidates should be motivated to publish in top-tier conferences and journals, enthusiastic about collaborative research, and willing to contribute to teaching and mentorship.
The application deadline is December 15, 2025. To apply, submit your CV, diploma, and motivation letter via the online portal. For further information, contact Prof. Glenn Van Wallendael at [email protected]. Late applications will not be considered.
