About this position

PhD position in immunology, autoimmune disease, and translational immunology at the University of Bergen, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science.

The project, “AIRE, IL-12 and interferon-g; Drivers of immune tolerance and T cell function”, investigates how AIRE, IL-12, and IFN-γ cooperate to establish immunological tolerance in the thymus, and how disruption of these pathways can contribute to autoimmunity. The work combines basic research, genetics, and translational approaches.

Research tasks include advanced mouse models, analysis of thymus, T cells, and peripheral immune cells, flow cytometry, single-cell RNA sequencing, CODEX-based tissue imaging, functional characterization of genetic variants from patient cohorts, and testing immunomodulatory drugs affecting IL-12/IFN-γ signalling.

This is a full-time, fixed-term PhD position for 3 years and is funded by the Norwegian Research Council. Salary is NOK 600,000 on the state salary scale, with higher salary levels possible for eligible medical doctors/dentists or medical specialists. The position includes pension enrolment and welfare benefits.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree or equivalent in molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field; documented laboratory experience; positive consideration for flow cytometry, immunological assays, qPCR, and animal research experience; strong independence, structure, collaboration skills, and fluent English.

Applicants with degrees from outside Norway must provide certified translations and HK-dir recognition documentation unless exempt. The application also requires a motivation statement, diplomas/transcripts, proof of English proficiency, publication list, any publications in your name, and two references.

Deadline: 6 August 2026.
