About this position

Tu Delft’s Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment is hiring a PhD researcher for the Horizon Europe project AURORA (Shaping safe, sustainable, and human-centered places).

The project focuses on accelerating the transition toward circular construction and climate-resilient buildings through innovative construction technologies, digital workflows, multi-level governance, and participatory processes. The PhD will be supervised by Assistant Professors Simona Bianchi and Olga Ioannou, and Associate Professor Maria Pregnolato.

Your research will develop a multi-scale assessment framework for circular and climate-resilient building construction and renovation pathways. The work includes mapping and cataloguing innovative building technologies, studying how products and product systems interact, building a digital database of structured data, and adapting the framework to different building typologies and hazard scenarios. A Dutch urban neighborhood case study is part of the project.

Relevant research interests include circular construction, resilience analysis, building technologies, building performance, GIS, digital workflows, and programming such as Python. The position is embedded in collaboration with TU Delft research groups in Structures and Materials, Building Design & Technology, and Hydraulic Structures and Flood Risk, with opportunities to work with European universities, industry partners, municipalities, and public authorities.

Applicants should hold an MSc in Building Sciences or a related field such as Architectural Engineering, Building Technology, Civil Engineering, or Environmental Engineering. Strong English skills are required; Dutch is a plus. Experience with multi-scale approaches and quantitative performance assessment is expected.

The position is funded for 48 months. Salary follows the Dutch university collective agreement, starting at €3059 and rising to €3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and relocation support.

Apply online by 4 October 2026. Submit a CV, motivation letter, references, MSc thesis, publications if any, and transcripts through the application portal.
