About this position

PhD opportunity in Multimodal AI and Game Research at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), School of Management and Law, in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

The project MATCH-IN-GAMES (Multimodal Analysis of Team Communication and Human Behaviour in Online Competitive Games) investigates how toxic behaviour and other social dynamics emerge in anonymous online multiplayer games. The doctoral research focuses on developing novel multimodal AI methods and pipelines to extract, integrate, and analyse gameplay, chat, audio, video, telemetry, and interaction data.

Responsibilities include collecting and curating multimodal datasets, applying quantitative methods to study player behaviour, interpreting findings in the context of game design, mechanics, genre, and player communities, publishing in leading conferences and journals, presenting at international events, and collaborating with researchers at ZHAW, TUM, and other partners.

The position is fully funded for three years through the DIZH Fellowship Programme. The successful candidate will be employed at ZHAW and enrolled as a doctoral researcher at TUM.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in AI, machine learning, computer science, data science, computational sciences, game studies, game technology, HCI, or a closely related field. Strong programming skills and experience with software development for research or ML applications are expected. Excellent English is required; German is an advantage.

Deadline: 30 August 2026. Apply online through the ZHAW portal.
