About this position

PhD position at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Faculty of Chemistry, in the research group of Prof. Dr. Bettina Siebers (Molecular Enzyme Technology and Biochemistry). The project is embedded in environmental microbiology and biotechnology and is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The doctoral project focuses on the role of polyphosphate (PolyP) and phosphate (Pi) homeostasis in archaea, using the thermoacidophilic model organism Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. Research topics include archaeal genetics, biochemical and enzymological characterization, quantitative physiology, protein-protein and protein-polyP interactions, and multi-omics/systems biology approaches.

Applicants should have a completed Master/Diplom in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, or a related field. Strong practical experience in molecular biology, microbiology, and/or protein biochemistry is expected; protein purification and enzyme characterization are advantageous. Very good English skills, independent and structured working habits, and strong teamwork/communication skills are required.

The position starts as soon as possible, lasts 36 months, and is paid according to TV-L 13 at 65% employment. The post includes a broad interdisciplinary research environment, collaboration with a complementary doctoral project, support for scientific qualification, conference participation, and publication opportunities.

Application deadline: 2026-11-05. Apply online with the usual documents and reference number 498-26.
