About this position
PhD opportunity at TU Delft in quantum nanoscience, nanomechanics, and superconducting qubits. The project focuses on creating superpositions of massive objects and testing the boundary between quantum mechanics and gravity using quantum torsional resonators.
You will design, fabricate, and measure silicon nitride ribbon torsional resonators coupled directly via magnetic flux to a superconducting qubit. The research aims to explore the fundamental limits of quantum behaviour in heavy, macroscopic objects and to push mechanical experiments into new regimes through quantum control.
The work is based in the SteeleLab in the Quantum Nanoscience Department at TU Delft, with access to the world-class Kavli Nanolab cleanroom facility in Delft. You will join a diverse team of academic staff, PhD students, and postdocs, and collaborate with local and international experimental and theoretical researchers.
Research keywords: quantum mechanics, nanomechanical resonators, superconducting quantum circuits, qubit control, nanofabrication, quantum measurements, nanomechanics, quantum superpositions.
Eligibility: an MSc in physics is required. An MSc in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering may also be suitable if you have strong motivation and experience with quantum mechanics or nanomechanics. English proficiency is required for doctoral study and scientific communication.
Funding and conditions: this is a paid PhD employment position for 4 years in principle, with salary from €3204 to €4051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The project is EU-funded (QTORSION, ERC/HE).
Application deadline: 15 October 2026. Apply online and upload your CV, degree transcripts, MSc thesis synopsis, and a cover letter describing your fit for the nanofabrication and qubit work.
