About this position
PhD position at the University of Copenhagen in stem cell-based disease modelling of the hypothalamus, hosted by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine (reNEW) in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.
The project is part of an international interdisciplinary consortium studying the molecular mechanisms of appetite regulation in human stem cell-derived hypothalamic in vitro models. The work combines stem cell biology, neuroscience, GPCR signaling, proteomics, and high-throughput screening to investigate receptor-mediated activation of appetite-suppressing and appetite-stimulating neurons.
You will work with human pluripotent stem cells, subtype-specific differentiation into neurons and glial cells, qRT-PCR, immunocytochemistry, automated image analysis, gene-edited cell lines, proximity labelling, and mechanistic studies in a collaborative research environment. The group also has strong translational interests in CNS disease modelling and stem cell-based therapies.
Eligibility highlights include a relevant Master’s degree (e.g. Biology, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Human Biology, Medicine or similar), experience with pluripotent stem cells and neural cultures, strong teamwork, and fluent English. Preferred experience includes organoids/3D cultures, cAMP assays, electrophysiology or MEA, confocal imaging, and CRISPR/Cas9 editing.
This is a full-time PhD position for 3 years. Salary and terms follow Danish university rules, with pension contribution included. Candidates from abroad may qualify for the Danish researcher tax scheme.

What's required
Master’s degree related to the project area such as Biology, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Human Biology, Medicine or a similar field. Applicants should have experience working with pluripotent stem cells and culturing neural cell types, a collaborative mindset with strong team spirit, and fluency in English (written and spoken). Strongly preferred experience includes 3D/organoid cultures, high-throughput screening and high-content image analysis, intracellular cAMP assays, assessment of neuronal connectivity/synapse formation/neuronal function (e.g. electrophysiology or MEA), qRT-PCR, ICC, confocal imaging, automated image analysis, and CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing of hiPSCs or hESCs.
