About this position

The University of Graz is offering a PhD position in the field of surface science within the Department of Chemistry. The successful candidate will focus on the characterization of single molecules on surfaces using advanced techniques such as scanning tunnelling microscopy and various spectroscopic methods.

The research aims to investigate elementary chemical processes with ultra-high spatial and temporal resolution, contributing to the understanding of molecular interactions at surfaces. Responsibilities include writing a dissertation, presenting scientific work at conferences, independent teaching and participation in examination tasks, supervising students, and engaging in organizational and administrative duties.

The position is designed for candidates with a completed diploma or master’s degree in Chemistry or Physics, and who possess knowledge or practical experience in scanning probe methods, optics, ultra-high vacuum, or low-temperature experiments. Proficiency in English, motivation, organizational skills, and teamwork are essential. The University of Graz offers an annual gross salary of at least €52,007.20 for a full-time position, with the possibility of overpayment based on qualifications and experience. The contract is for four years, starting January 4, 2026, with a 30-hour work week.
