About this position

PhD position at the University of Girona (AMADE research group) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Construction, Spain.

The project focuses on integrated analysis and modeling with tomography of damage evolution in composite materials. The successful candidate will join AMADE (Analysis and Advanced Materials for Structural Design), an internationally recognised research group working on advanced solutions for aeronautical, automotive, nautical, civil, and sustainable hydrogen applications. The group combines numerical simulation, manufacturing, experimental testing of composite materials, lightweight structural design, 3D printing, cryogenic applications, and materials sustainability.

This PhD is aimed at First Stage Researcher (R1) level candidates with a strong background in engineering and computational mechanics. The research topics include finite element modelling, simulation of damage and fracture in heterogeneous or composite materials, advanced constitutive modelling, tomography-based analysis, Digital Image Correlation / Digital Volume Correlation (DIC/DVC), three-dimensional image analysis, and automated workflows for simulation and post-processing.

Applicants should have a master's degree or equivalent, obtained in 2022 or later, and excellent English proficiency. Desired skills include Python or MATLAB programming, knowledge of Paraview, GNU/Linux, C++, VTK, and QT, and prior research experience in composite materials, fracture mechanics, structural engineering, or computational mechanics. The position also values experience with scientific writing, publications, and participation in experimental campaigns and laboratory work.

The contract is temporary and full-time, with 37.5 hours per week. The grant lasts 1 year and includes a gross remuneration of 19,640.86 EUR. The application deadline is 1 October 2026 at 23:00 (Europe/Brussels), and the expected start date is 1 December 2026.

To apply, candidates must complete the online form, upload a CV, and email academic transcripts showing average grades for both bachelor's and master's degrees. Non-Spanish degrees require an official Declaration of Equivalence of Average Grades. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

What's required

Master's degree or equivalent is required. Candidates should have experience and/or knowledge in numerical modelling of materials and structures using the Finite Element Method (FEM), simulation of damage and fracture mechanisms in heterogeneous or composite materials, development and implementation of advanced constitutive models and computational mechanics methodologies, processing and analysis of experimental data including Digital Image Correlation (DIC/DVC) and three-dimensional image analysis, generation and exploitation of digital models based on experimentally acquired geometries, and scientific programming/automation of simulation workflows and data post-processing (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or equivalent). Additional merits include knowledge of Paraview, GNU/Linux, C++, VTK, and QT; research experience in computational mechanics, composite materials, fracture mechanics, or structural engineering; ability to work in multidisciplinary environments combining numerical simulation and experimental validation; proficiency in scientific English; experience in scientific writing, publications, technical reports, or project documentation; outreach/knowledge transfer experience; and availability to participate in experimental campaigns and laboratory/scientific-technical service facilities. The candidate must have obtained a master's degree in 2022 or later. English level: excellent.

How to apply
