About this position
The University of Bremen is offering two postdoctoral positions in the Advanced Ceramics Research Group within Department 4 (Production Engineering) in the research area of polymer-derived ceramics. The project focuses on applied research on SiOC-based sorption materials for the cyclic removal of CO₂ from industrial exhaust gases at 500–600 °C, with a view to fixed-bed reactor operation.
The positions are fixed-term for 2 years and are based in an interdisciplinary environment where engineers, materials scientists, chemists, and biologists collaborate on innovative ceramic materials for biotechnology, environmental protection, separation and energy technology, catalysis, and space applications. The advertised work centers on the production of porous ceramics with tailored porosity and surface functionalisation.
Successful candidates will work on developing organosilicon precursor systems with CO₂-active additives, optimizing synthesis and pyrolysis conditions, shaping porous pellets or granules, and characterizing porosity, microstructure, phase composition, and mechanical stability. The project also includes TGA-based investigations of CO₂ adsorption, regeneration, and cycle stability, as well as close collaboration with an industrial partner.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field, alongside prior academic training in chemistry, materials science, or chemical process engineering. Experience in sol-gel chemistry, polymer chemistry, or inorganic/organic chemistry is required, together with experience in analysing polymeric or ceramic materials. German or English at B2 level is required. Knowledge of thermal analysis, gas-solid reactions, or porosity analysis is considered an advantage.
The positions are classified according to TV-L 13, with one post at 75% and one at 50% of regular working hours. The salary range given for a full-time position is EUR 57,112.44 to EUR 81,176.28 gross annually, depending on qualifications and prior experience. The University of Bremen highlights its creative work environment, strong research infrastructure, interdisciplinary collaborations, professional development opportunities, flexible working arrangements, and family-friendly culture.
Applications must be submitted by 23 October 2026 via unencrypted email as a single PDF to [email protected] and [email protected], quoting reference number A183-26. Required documents include a motivation letter, CV, qualification certificates, references if available, and a one-page summary of the doctoral dissertation.
