About this position

The International PhD Programme (IPP) Mainz at the Institute of Molecular Biology in Mainz, Germany, is recruiting for a fully funded PhD position focused on the molecular interactions of the mammalian circadian clock.

Hosted by the research group of Eva Wolf, the project explores how PERIOD proteins interact within PER/CRY/CK1 complexes and with partner proteins such as WDR5 and REV-ERB/ROR nuclear receptors. The research is centered on the primary and secondary feedback loops of the mammalian circadian clock and aims to reveal how these interactions influence circadian oscillations and gene regulation across a 24-hour cycle.

The PhD candidate will use a combination of in vitro protein biochemistry, high-resolution 3D structure determination by X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM, quantitative and biophysical interaction studies, spectroscopy, and molecular biology. The project is therefore well suited to candidates interested in structural biology, protein complex analysis, and mechanistic studies of circadian regulation.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline and have good English skills. The call also emphasizes prior exposure to 3D-structural, biochemical, and biophysical analyses of proteins and protein complexes, as well as practical experience with relevant techniques. An interactive personality and two letters of reference are also required.

The position is part of an international, interdisciplinary PhD environment with English as the working language, access to core facilities, and advanced training in scientific and professional skills. Funding is provided until completion of the thesis.

The application deadline is 15 October 2026. Interviews are planned for 18–19 January 2027 at IMB in Mainz, and the expected starting date is between 1 February and 31 July 2027. To apply, use the online form at the IPP application page and select Wolf as the preferred group.
